Meridian Cares Emergency Needs Fundraiser

Meidian Cares

Meridian Cares Team Aims to Raise $10,000 for Those in Need Raffle Tickets Being Sold to Reach Goal.

The Meridian Cares Team is organizing its second “Meridian Cares Emergency Needs Fundraiser” for residents in the Township who are in need of assistance this holiday season. According to the U.S. Census, about 13 percent or 5,000 people in Meridian Township live below the poverty level and almost 3,000 people live below 50 percent of the poverty level.

The Township aims to raise $10,000 by December 16th to help replenish the fund. The Meridian Cares Team is working closely with the Meridian Township Community Resources Commission (CRC) to generate funds through raffle ticket sales.

“Many households will be lacking this holiday season and   having to make choices between food, utilities, rent or medication and this is one way in which the community can reach out to our neighbors to help them enjoy what the rest of us often take for granted,” said Suzanne Brouse, Chair of the Community Resources Commission.

In 2014, the Meridian Cares Team exceeded its goal by more than $5,000 and was able to provide $8,300 to families in need. This year, the goal is to present a ceremonial check for $10,000 to the Community Resources Commission at the December 16thannual holiday luncheon.

Sponsored by the East Lansing/ Meridian Lions Club, raffle tickets will be available for purchase beginning November 4th and will be sold for $10 each or 3 tickets for $20. Tickets can be purchased at Meridian Township Office Buildings and participating businesses.

Those who purchase raffle tickets will get the chance to win a gift basket valued between $50 and $200 from local businesses and the Meridian Cares Team. Winners will be announced on the Meridian Township Facebook page on December 16th

Ingham County Regional Trails and Parks Plan

As you may remember, in November of 2014 voters in Ingham County approved a 0.5 mil levy ($3.2M/year) to support building new trails and restoring parks in our county. There will be a Public Meeting on Thursday, October 15, 2015 at 6:30PM in the Meridian Township Town Hall Room (see flyer) to give citizens an opportunity to provide input on how this money should be spent. This is one of six meetings to be held in various parts of the county and it is important that Meridian Township and other area citizens attend if they want to have a fair portion of our tax dollars spent on projects that benefit our part of the county. Other areas (the City of Lansing in particular) have plans that would absorb most if not all of the available funds so it is imperative that park and trail users in our area speak up and provide the Ingham County Trails and Parks Task Force with ideas and input so that county facilities in our area receive the upgrades and improvements they need.

See Ingham County Regional Trails and Parks Planning Process for more information.

Wardcliff Drive Re-paving

A crew from the Ingham County Road Department (ICRD) was in the neighborhood on Wednesday July 22nd to begin preparing the road for re-paving.  All of Wardcliff Drive from the cul-de-sac north to the corner of Wardcliff and Heather Drive will get a new surface in late August or early September.  The ICRD crew was removing grass from the edges of the street and will come back to treat any grass growing in cracks in the pavement with weed killer.  When the contractor hired by the county arrives they will grind up the old surface layer, mix it with some additional materials under high temperature and then lay it back down on the roadway.  This process will take only two or three hours to complete. After the surface cures for couple of weeks they will come back and add an additional top layer of new material.  It should all be completed by mid-September if things go as scheduled.
